Book Review: Song of the Dragon (The Annals of Drakis #1)

Image
I picked up this book because I wanted to read fantasy. I had been reading historial and realistic fiction (which are great, too) and I wanted to go back to my geeky roots. I wanted a book about Dragons, and even when no Dragons actually appeared in this book, it all seems there will be some in part 2 and 3. Song of the Dragon is the first out of three parts. The character of Drakis, a human, is introduced. He is a slave. Well, mostly, they ALL are. The elves are the masters and to keep everyone under their control they brainwash them every night into thinking they are lucky to be slaves. Pretty clever, these elves. These world had different species, and the human race is supposedly the weakest one; and also the one who is almost extinct. Well, since the elves control most species except for the dwarves, they are trying to get rid of them. It is during this war that Drakis meets a dwarf that breaks the spell. I thought it was a very interesting premise. These group who s...

Book Review: And Then There Were None

I had heard about Agatha Christie being an awesome mystery writer. I had never read one of her books (shame on me!), but I did see the 1982 picture "Evil Under the Sun" when I was young and I absolutely loved it! I, in fact, watched it again with my husband last year because he'd never seen it, and he loved it, too! I am still to read that book, but I am glad my first one was "And Then There Were None". I found it at Barnes and Noble (yes, there I was again) on a table with "classics" or "must reads". I knew who Agatha Christie was and I picked up her book and bought it. There it rested on my night table for a few days until I read the title again on one of those Facebook posts that list books you "must read". I do feel ashamed for waiting for Facebook to tell me to read it, by the way. I went through the book fast and every time I went to bed I would think it would be ME who was next! I would look at my bedroom door th...

Graphic Novel Review: Monstress

Image
We were walking around Barnes and Noble while trying to complete the Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt on the day Cursed Child was released when I stopped in front of a rack filled with comic books featuring women as the main character. The art was the first thing that attracted me to this comic book (graphic novel). The artist is Sana Takeda, who draws almost like manda, and the writer Marjorie Liu. Although the characters are beautifully drawn, the fact that the entire comic book is basically brown got a little tiresome after a while. Also, the plot was confusing at first, and since I was learning the mythology through dialogue (very complicated mythology), I felt a little frustrated at first. Unfortunately, it did not catch my attention enough after the first compilation to keep reading it, but it wasn't awful either. Perhaps with a little patience I would have learned to like it. I always respect people who take their stories and get them out into the world and I'm g...

Book Review: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Image
I was still to reread Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows before Cursed Child came out. I had reread 1-6 and I enjoyed reading every word of it again immensely, but I couldn't want to finish number seven before I read the new play that came out on July 31st. My nine year old read all the 7 books last year and she was also excited to get her hands on book 8, so on July 30th, we set out to Barnes and Noble for the HP Cursed Child release party. We had a GREAT time! I had decided from the start not to buy the physical book, but the kindle version, so even when we went to B&N early, we didn't need to stay until midnight for the release. We left at around 10 P.M. and went to bed before midnight... the next morning, the eight book would be waiting for us on my Kindle. And I read it. I read it all the way through Sunday morning. It took me about three to four hours to finish it all. I admit it would have been better if I could have seen the play... or at least a mo...

Thoughts: About Video Game Walkthroughs

Image
I have played videogames since the Atari was invented. I don't consider myself a gamer, although several people have called me that. Back in the day I played Mario Bros., Megaman, Contra, Master Blaster, Metroid, and many others; and of course... Zelda. Even when I have played The Legend of Zelda a little, I became a fan of the title with Link to the Past. I still play Zelda titles now. Apart from Zelda, the other title I have played often is Final Fantasy. I started with Final Fantasy II (which is really VI), and III (which is really VI), and VII and VII. That is as far as my Final Fantasy experience goes. I did start the first Final Fantasy on the iPad a while back (over a year ago), but I haven't played it in months. To me, Final Fantasy is Rydia, Cecil and Rosa, or Cloud, Aeris and Tifa. And don't get me started on the  music ! When I played videogames on the Atari, NES, Super NES or Playstation, I did not use walkthroughs. If they existed, I was ignorant of thei...
