Book Review: Deep Blue

Image
If you've seen this book around the bookstore, I recommend you pick it up and read it. I didn't, by the way. I went to Barnes and Noble and bought 3 books, but not this one. I did see it, though, and picked it up... and read the back... and wanted to, but didn't know and then... left it on the shelf. Big mistake. A few weeks later I visited my sister-in-law and my 12 year old niece HAD the entire series (or what's out right now) sitting on her bookshelf! I asked her what she thought and she recommended it. I.couldn't.put.it.down. I really enjoyed it. It's a different underwater world. Most common things are a little different because, well, not everything works the same way underwater. It starts like a typical teenage drama, but soon things get really exciting and interesting. One thing follows the next and when it's over you want to know how the prophecy will unravel! It was a great read and I can't wait to go back to my sister-in...

Video Game Review: Zelda Breath of the Wild - After 80 Hours of Gameplay

Image
I've been playing Breath of the Wild mostly every day. My husband has been working late and after the kids go to bed I play for about 1 hours every night. That and, the weekends, when I have time to play more. It's been over a month now since the game's release and I'm a little over 80 hours of gameplay. So far, I have managed to complete a second stamina wheel and gain Urbosa's Lightning (Fury) power, which is amazing! I also now have the sand boots and snow boots and this wonderful and incredible diadem which allows me to basically be immune to cold weather (except when I fall in the freezing waters, of course). This ruby diadem helped me finally go into the Hebra region where I activated the last tower, which has now revealed all of the map for me. I have found the third fairy (the one in the dessert) and are now missing a bunch of insects and monster parts in order to upgrade my armor. Also, I have completed two of the labyrinths and now have in my ...

Video Game Review: Zelda Breath of the Wild... After the First 65 Hours

Image
I am currently playing Breath of the Wild, the new installment in the Zelda series on the Switch. Yes. On the switch. I own a Wii and Wii U, but that Friday, March 3rd, I went to my second closest Target and they still had 12 in stock, so I got one. I also got the Zelda special edition game. I am a fan of Zelda, though I confess I have not played all of the Zelda games, and my favorites are Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. This is also my first time playing an open world game. My husband has played them. He doesn't play Zelda, but he owns an XBox and Playstation 4 and he has played Witcher and Skyrim (among others) and loves them. It wouldn't surprise me if he buys Breath of the Wild for the Wii U (which is now his) and plays it, too. I do have kids and other responsibilities, but whenever I can I play Breath of the Wild. So far, in the 20 days I have owned it, I have played for 65 hours. So far, I am enjoying it more than I sh...

Book Review: Castle Hangnail

Image
I read this book by Ursula Vernon because my nine year old daughter recommended it to me. How she got to this book from the hundreds of books in the library's shelves it's beyond me, but I'm glad she did. This book is about magic. It is written for the younger audience, but I thought the characters had more  depth  than some adult books I've read. The story follows a little girl who actually has magical powers who is looking to belong to the supernatural world. And so, she pretends to be someone else to get herself a castle to rule. I highly recommend it. In fact, I wanted it for my classroom library and it was still very expensive and I thought I would get it for another year. Instead, I bought more of Ursula Vernon's books (Dragon Breath, to be exact). What a wonderful author! cheers!

Book and Movie Review: The Help

Image
What an amazing book and movie! It was a great read about how black people were treated back in the 60s. How people are racist even if they think they aren't. How people are mean even if they think they aren't. It's a book about doing the right thing even if it's dangerous; even if you go against what the rest of society thinks it's right. Kind of like it's happening now with  other  issues. It was a beautifully written story about women, about different kinds of women with different thoughts and feelings and priorities. It was about LIFE and how beautiful and how hard it is at the same time. It is about being different and misunderstood and trapped and not giving up. It is about hope. It is wonderful. And the movie, even with the little changes they made, it's still a very good adaptation of the source material with a phenomenal casting. cheers!

Videogame Review: Final Fantasy X

Image
Mostly I play Zelda. But my second favorite video game has to be the Final Fantasy Series. The first one I played was IV (and later the After Years), but I've also played and finished VI and VII. I have played VIII, but I could not finish it, something about not having the right summons to win the final battle. And I started playing I on the ipad but my husband erased my progress. Ha! Well, now I can add Final Fantasy X to my list of finished video games. I wasn't too sure I liked it at first, but after a while I learned to like it. I began to understand and respect the way the grid worked to gain abilities and magic. I used the summons (Aeons in this game) wisely and was happy to get a full HP/MP whenever I saved. The story was also a bit complicated at first, but once you learn what is truly going on, well... it blew me away! And the ENDING! It's so emotional I cried. Totally worth it. I then payed $4 to get Final Fantasy X-2. I'm playing that one now...

Book Review: Nightmares!

Image
During the summer, I insisted that my daughter read the Texas Bluebonnet books (the nominees, anyway). Our neighborhood library has a list advertised in one of the shelves (that and, they are online) so I did my best to promote more quality reading for my daughter (who is now in 4th grade). She of course, wanted to keep reading her tween books (like  Dork  Diaries ) and I had a hard time getting her to read them. Even when she did read  some , she did not want to read  Nightmares!.  Now, an interesting thing about this book - at least to me - is that one of the authors is Jason Segel, who I had seen in  Freaks and Geeks, How I Met Your Mother  and other movies. That made the book even more intriguing. And so one day, I just checked it out and began to read. Coincidentally, the school's librarian recommended this book to my daughter and, of course she did listen to her, she began to read it as well.  It is rare when we read a book t...
