Graphic Novel Review: Sweet Tooth Vol. 3

Image
Well, I got to the third volume of Sweet Tooth, the post-apocalyptic adult comic book where most people were killed by some sickness ( a la The Stand), and strange hybrid children begin to pop up everywhere. The story continues where it left off. Sweet Tooth's (Gus) story keeps developing since we last saw his in the last volume. We are now about to find out where exactly he came from and if he is responsible for the sickness.  Although I'm still not sure where the story is trying to get into, the writing is wonderful and the characters interesting. I just can't seem to put it down. The art is the only thing I would change, but then again, it kind of goes with the depressing post-apocalyptic theme, as well, so I don't know. I still recommend this series very much. cheers!

Book Review: Murder on the Orient Express

Image
In the back of my mind I remember watching this movie years ago. My parents are fans of Agatha Christie and when I was younger we would watch the movies they made together (Evil Under the Sun being my favorite movie).  This is one of Agatha Christie's novels where the hero is Hercules Poirot. Such a vivid and exaggerated character, but I love him! I love the language, as well! It reads funny in my head as I go through the dialogue, but it's still perfect. I confess that even when the plot sounded familiar I still could not guess the ending until almost the last pages of the book, but by then it was pretty clear. This is also the second book from her that I read (I read And Then There Were None last year). So far, she has been living up to her reputation. cheers!

Book Review: Handmaid's Tale

Image
I had heard so much about the TV series based on this book that I just had to read it.  It is a very depressing post-apocalyptic book about something that, in my opinion, could definitely happen. That just made it all the more depressing. The story telling in itself really wasn't for me. I never truly got into the book at all. About half-way it became a little more interesting, especially because the author finally produced an explanation as to what in the world happened in the past to get the main character where she was.  It was still a horrible book because there was no hope at all for any one. It is just such a depressing world. I was depressed when I finally finished it and worse, I could never really say I read for pleasure. It was a task. I gave it three stars because of this. I could see how the writing was novel and different, but I guess it just wasn't for me. If you already saw the TV series, you know what I mean... if not, you may not get to se...

Book Review: Wonder

Image
I have been wanting to read this book for the longest time. Well, at least since I began teaching 3rd grade back in 2014. The book cover is just so tempting. I had read the blurb in the back and it looked interesting. It wasn't until I saw that they were making a movie out of it that I realized I was running out of time. If anything, watching the movie before reading the book is one of the worst things I can do. So I did what needed to be done, I checked the book out of the library. Well, I put my name on hold. And it was on hold for about a month and a half. Then, when they finally let me know it was waiting for me, I couldn't go get it because we went on vacation and I missed my chance. That was last summer. In November, I tried again. I think they had more copies available now because it only took a few days for it to become available. This time, I made sure I went to pick it up. It is a fantastic book. So easy to read! The chapters are super short, like one or t...

Book Review: Hilo #3

Image
I finally got around to reading the third book in the Hilo series. Hilo is a robot from another dimension who has some powers and a really quirky sense of humor. It's written in comic book form and the adventures no longer stick to just Earth. Not after the ending of Hilo #2. The story was still funny and wild and we got to know a little more about Hilo and why he decided to help humans instead of destroying them. I enjoy reading this books very much and the kids LOVE them. Just like the other two, part three is filled with jokes and action. It does end in a little cliffhanger, so I can't wait to get to know the character that we are introduced at the end. cheers!

Book Review: Sea Spell (Waterfire Saga #4)

Image
I finally got to read the conclusion to Jennifer Donnelly's Waterfire Saga. It was amazing to the end. I can't recommend this series more. It's a story filled with war, magic, and strong female leads. Even when some parts were a little predictable it was still enjoyable and had enough mystery to keep me wanting for more. I honestly did not see coming how the story ended and the epilogue was just perfect, too. Now all I have to do is wait for the movie version (if only). But wouldn't a mermaid story like this one be an awesome movie?  It had been a while since I read a saga like this one and I thank my niece for lending me the first three books in the series and the library for lending me the last one. cheers!

Book Review: Ink and Bone (The Great Library Part 1)

Image
The story of how I decided to read Ink and Bone is out of the ordinary. Our public library put up posters about an author coming visit. It was Rachael Caine, the author of Ink and Bone. My daughter is going into 5th grade and since the event was aimed for 6th to 12th graders I signed her up anyway. Fortunately they let her in. Not just her, they let everybody  in once we were there. Too bad, because my husband had read her Ink and Bones books and wanted to attend and was disappointed to hear it was just for grades 6th to 12th. I had my eight year old with me that day and he wasn't interested in the least to go in a room where an author details event of her life (because he's eight), so I had to skip it being forced to stay with him outside. *Deep breaths* It turned out to be a great experience for my 10 year old, who also won the Ink and Bone paperback while being there (a lot of people won books, too). She even got her picture taken with her: This is how I l...

Graphic Novel Review: Courtney Crumrin Vol 1. The Night Things

Image
I read the first volume of a one, Courtney Crumrin, only because my ten year old  daughter put it in front of me and said, "Mom, you have to read this, you'd like this." I looked at the book, it was a graphic novel, it was dark  looking and I had no choice but to agree to read it. It was not bad. The story is mostly about magic (as in warlocks and witches) and monsters that live in the shadows. There are some things I didn't like for a young ten year old to be reading. For example, the parents are idiots. This is not only my opinion, it is said they are dumb several times during the story. They are shallow and don't really care about their children. The people who live in the town are apparently rich, only care about appearances and again, don't really care about their children. The children grow up to be vain and bullies. What in the world? The parents don't care about their children so much that when a baby is replaced by a baby-looking monste...
