Graphic Novel Review: Saga Vol. 8 & 9

Image
I had to write both reviews together because vol. 8 and 9 are just like day and night. Saga Vol. 8 is one of my favorites so far. In fact, I wish I'd stop reading there. Even though it deals with dark situations, it does it in a way that, even when it's sad, it doesn't feel disrespectful. I think it's one of the most positive volumes so far and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters seemed to make connections naturally, they have learned to trust each other and want happiness. This adult graphic novel explores current events in an intergalactic world where race (there are many planets) and gender are mixed beyond belief, but it only makes sense. The situation in the story's background is still explosive in Vol. 8. Our main characters are still fugitives in their forbidden love because of a war that is now meaningless. It's a war nobody wants to fight but continues just because of pre-established prejudices that seem to be passed on more than ...

Book Review: The Hazel Wood

Image
I finished The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert today and was so glad I did. I confess this book wasn't really for me. The writing made me lose my focus very often. I don't know, there was something about the prose that didn't get me interested enough to pay attention. It was weird. The story was a little original, but the writing made it confusing and surreal. I didn't enjoy most of the book because it was unclear what was happening, why or how. Yes, how. I guess the secret of the Hazel Wood and the world it held wasn't what I was expected at all. Not only that, it was dark and depressing. Who would want to read those stories? I couldn't even get through the last fairy tale in the epilogue. I didn't see the point of any of them. There was no message, nothing to look forward to. I think they were grimmer than the Hans Christian Andersen stories (the really sad ones). I don't know. Maybe some of you will enjoy it more than I did. But I certainly w...

Book Review: Serafina and the Twisted Staff

Image
The first thing I have to say about this series is how awesome the covers are. Seriously, I think the main reason I picked it up in the first place was because of the cover. Well, just like the first installment, I picked up book two in the Serafina series by Robert Beatty because of the pretty cover (and also because it was $2) when I saw it at my school's book fair. The teachers at my school usually get a few dollars to spend in the book fairs and this is how I've come to own the first and second book of this series. I must tell you, it was really hard for me to read it at first. I couldn't understand why. I'd read about half the book and it was just... well, boring . These are books with magic and shifters and action... just, not the first half of the second book, I guess. There was too much description, too much information about what the character was doing and thinking. It was just too much. I'm not saying it's wrong, but maybe it's not for m...
