Book Review: The Westing Game

I'm not sure how I feel about The Westing Game.

I read it because it was required reading for my fourth grader. He seems to love it. Or at least, he talks about the book like it was great and he claims he wants to read it again... although, he hasn't touched his copy after he read it in class during the Fall.

I thought I gave it a try. It was a little confusing, to tell the truth. I found that POV (point of view) changed in the same sentences. Sometimes even more than once. It was hard to follow who was thinking and talking.

Also, there were too many characters. Every time they mentioned someone I had to go back to remember who that was and why they were important.

This is supposed to be a "murder" mystery, and they were supposed to be giving you clues. But the clues were very frustrating and they didn't really let you make your own predictions of what was going on. Once the answer was revealed it wasn't that satisfying.

I don't know. Definitely not one of my favorite books. But, it's a classic. Some people must find it wonderful.

Cheers!
