Audiobook Review: Sabriel

I have heard about this book from several people in several reading groups. I confess I've been tempted to read it for a while. I even looked it up several times but always decided to read something else instead.

But then someone mentioned the audiobook was narrated by Tim Curry, so I used my credit to get it and I listened to it right away.

I loved the story and language. The character Sabriel was well written. A normal young girl with the necromancer ability. Her father is the Abhorsen, which is a bit like the master necromancer who keeps the death in line.

In this story, whenever someone dies, they need to go through nine gates. And it isn't until you've crossed the ninth gate that you are truly dead.

Young Sabriel is about to graduate from school when her father appears to give her the Abhorsen's gear. Since she knows something's happened to her father, she sets out to look for his body to try to bring him back to life. During her journey, she must cross the line to the old kingdom, where there are many dangers and the death. Also, she discovers she is now the Abhorsen—a title she prefers her father to have.

During her journey, she meets two interesting characters. A speaking cat and a soldier.

The book had some parallels with the Harry Potter storyline. The final battle reminded me a bit of the Battle of Hogwarts. I wish the author had expanded a bit more on the ending, but it satisfied me enough, I guess.

A good book that I recommend to everyone looking for a good fantasy.

Cheers!
