Book Review: The House in the Cerulean Sea

I had heard so much about this book that I had to see for myself what all the fuss was about.

And boy was I disappointed when I began reading the first chapters. There is a style of writing I simply can’t connect to that a lot of people love. Books like the ones by Terry Pratchett, Christopher Moore, and others have a way with the prose that I can’t seem to enjoy.

My husband LOVES Terry Pratchett (RIP), and the humorous books by Christopher Moore bring him much joy, but I… they aren’t for me. The only book I tried reading from Moore, I couldn’t finish (it's titled Lamb), but I have read two of Pratchett’s books (so far, and I would like to read more only because my husband enjoys them so much). The style of writing is still not my favorite.

Well, The House in the Cerulean Sea's style reminded me a lot of those. But I continued on. And on. And then, I got to chapter 15 and that made me fall in love with the character of Arthur Parnassus. I connected with him in a major way in that instant and the entire book took on a whole new meaning for me. I just needed to know all about him and I didn't want the story to end.

The book is also LGTB, and it is done beautifully. It’s wholesome and wonderful. The writing style may not have changed, but my perspective did, because in a lot of ways, I AM Arthur Parnassus. Maybe you’ll see yourself in him, too.

I can’t recommend this book enough.

Cheers!
