Book Review: Mexican Gothic
This was a strange book. It was creepy and mysterious. To be honest, I went into it not really knowing if it had any paranormal elements. From the description, I couldn't really tell, either.
The story is about a Mexican woman who is sent by her father to investigate what happened to her cousin after receiving a strange letter. She goes to this creepy house on a hill, and everyone in there is creepy. They tell the woman, Noemí, that in the house, you should only speak English. Her cousin is always in her room, sleeping so much she rarely gets a chance to be with her. When she does, Noemí notices her strange behavior (because, did I notice everyone in there is creepy?)
In the house, there are more creepy people. There's the cousin's husband, who looks normal, but you get a sense he is really hiding something. Her sister, a woman who is like the house keeper and who has some very strict rules (like, no one is allowed to talk during dinner), and her son, a pale introverted young man. Then there's the husband's father, who looks ancient and can barely move. There are a few servants, too, but they are like zombies because they don't talk ever and they just go about taking care of the house.
Again. Creepy.
There is a secret going on in this house. I won't tell you if it's paranormal or not. And as Noemí spends more and more time in the house, she begins to see things. The reason why I realized right away. Plus, the author gives you plenty of clues. But then, when everything is revealed. Man! I never imagined something like that!
The story can be a bit frustrating because I couldn't figure out how she could fight everything that kept happening to her.
Overall, it was a good book, but I struggled with the helplessness from a character that is presented as being very strong.
Cheers!
