Book Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Well, I confess I read this book because it came up as banned on several lists, and I was curious. I knew there was a movie of it staring Emma Watson and the guy from the Percy Jackson movies (who I am partial to), and didn't seem like a movie I wanted to see. But I became curious about the book and so, I gave it a go.
I actually loved the story, and it was very easy for me to identify with the main character.
But I can see why it's banned. It talks about a LOT of sensitive topics, and although I think (and this is MY opinion) a sixteen year old will understand the message in this book, I don't know if some fourteen year olds that attend high school will take what this book really has to teach. Also in my opinion, some situations in the book are a little unrealistic, but again, if you think about what it's really trying to say, you should be fine.
I also still think that banning it just draws more attention to the book. They should have just leave it be. Decisions become more complicated in the world as I grow up. Too many shades of gray, too many lenses.
The story deals with suicide, abuse, intolerance to LGBTQ, drug abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, abortion, and much more. I understand the characters are teens and that assigns it the YA genre, but it can get a little sad at times.
Still, good book that makes you think.
Cheers!
