Rambling from a Gamer Mom: Games I'm Looking Forward to Playing in 2023

Games I'm Looking Forward to Playing in 2023

Hello, and welcome to my first edition of Ramblings from a Gamer Mom. I wanted to make a post series about gaming and another one about writing, but as I was rolling in bed at 6am, I couldn't keep videogames out of my mind.

This morning, I will continue playing Spiderman: Miles Morales, and the game may take me to the end of the year.

I am not only a mom, but a wife to the most incredible man (and gamer, modder, and programmer). My husband used to play videogames a a child, but stopped in his teens. It wasn't until we were married with children that I bought Skyrim while looking for another game that felt like Zelda that he started playing. And then modding. And the rest is history.

My favorite games are the Zelda series (including Breath of the Wild, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, and Ocarina of Time). But now I am also in love with Witcher 3, Skyrim, the Uncharted and Tomb Raider, and God of War—to mention a few.

Before, I used to play the Zelda titles over and over. Now, I have a list of games and very little time (did I mention I have a full time job, and also try to self-publish books?).

Now, I own a Switch, an XBox and a PS4 (I've been trying to get a PS5, but with no luck). Games are sometimes exclusive, and I want to be able to play what I want.

Games I'm Looking Forward to Play in 2023:

I guess I can divide this list in two parts. There are games that are already out that I want to play, and games that aren't out yet.

Games that are already out:

1. Ghosts of Tsushima

Console: PS4 or PS5 (if I can get my hands on one)

About: I love using a sword in open world games. That's the reason I love games like Zelda, Skyrim and Witcher 3 so much. I hear Ghosts of Tsushima can be very much like Witcher 3. I also hear that the story is good, and more and more I get more involved in these wonderful cinematic games with great stories. Looking forward to playing it on my Play Station 4 (or PS5 if I can get my hands on one).

2. Red Dead Redemption:

Console: XBox

About: I have also heard good things about Red Dead Redemption 2. Although I've also heard that it's got all kinds of small side quests. Usually, I'm not that interest in these. I am not a completionist. I may do a few of these side quests, but the main quest is what most interests me. Although I am more of a sword gamer, I'm willing to use the gun for Red Dead Redemption 2 if it gives me a good story, quests, and gameplay. I would play it on the XBox, since RDR2 is probably included in GamePass. Note: It is. Just checked ;)

3. Dishonored 1 and 2:

Console: XBox

About: For a long time I've called this game the "Rat Game". LOL. I've seen my husband play them and all I see is rats. My brother has played it too. They have nothing buy great things to say about it. I know that I can choose to be stealth or not and that my decisions greatly affect the ending of the game. The only thing I don't like about this game is that it HAS to be a first person game, and I don't like those at all. I like to see the character as I play. I have decided if I'll play the first one instead of gling straight to the second one. I'll be playing them on the XBox for sure.

4. God of War Ragnarok:

Console: PS4 (or PS5)

Just Released: November 9th, 2022

By the time you read this, God of War Ragnarok will already be out and about. I don't like playing games when they are just released, so I'll be playing this one after I play a few others. I enjoyed God of War more than I thought I would. The art and story were superb, and I couldn't complain about the gameplay either. I'm looking forward to Kratos and Atreus' banter—I just loved them. And I'm curious to know what happens next in the story (because I did go back to their cottage after finishing the game and I saw the extra scene! Totally surprised).

I'll be playing the game on my Play Station 4 (unless I get it for the PS5. I hear some PS5 come with God of War Ragnarok. Yay!)

5. Uncharted: Lost Legacy:

Console: PS4 (or PS5)

I was happy to play the four Uncharted games after my husband convinced me to play them. To tell the truth, I believe that the right way to enjoy this story is from the beginning. But, if you've played the last Uncharted, them you know how wholesome it ends. I mean, it ENDS. That's it. Why mess with a good thing. Well, now my husband keeps trying to convince me that if I don't play Uncharted: Lost Legacy, then I haven't really finished Uncharted. Nathan Drake isn't there anymore (a thing I will miss), but I hear there are a few characters from the series who make an appearance and that it isn't that long to play. I now have this game on my To-Play-List.

Games that will come out:

1. Breath of the Wild: Tears of the Kingdom:

Console: Switch

Release Date: May 12, 2023

About: I love Zelda. Zelda is the series that made a gamer out of me. And Breath of the Wild? I played it twice! I loved it so much. I must have played a total of 500 hours between both runs. Now, the sequel? I will break my rule of not playing games on release date with this one. Can't wait! Since it's a Nintendo exclusive, I will dust off my Switch to play it.

2. Hogwarts Legacy:

Console: XBox

Release Date: February 10th, 2023

About: As a Harry Potter fan, I just have to play Hogwarts Legacy. I am a Hufflepuff (although in the new release of Pottermore I ended up being a Griffindor), and I intend to play the game as a Hufflepuff. I'm excited about this game, but unsure about the gameplay. I confess I'm not the best with the controller. I usually can't remember all the button placements or combos to use all of the abilities characters in games have. But I will do my best to cast those spells. Hopefully the quests are fun and I have a great time with it. Crossing my fingers. As for a console? XBox, definitely.

3. Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part 2:

Console: PS4 (or PS5)

Release Date: Winter 2023

About: What can I say. I played the original FFVII when I was younger (I was 21 years old then). I remember I finished it and struggled with Sephiroth but prevailed thanks to Cid's limit break (the one where he jumps and jumps and jumps—a bit like how Kain helped me with vs. Zeromus in FFIV). I did try to replay it, but I didn't finish the second playthrough. Then I played Final Fantasy VII Remake Part I a few months after it was released. I wasn't crazy about the gameplay and I wasn't crazy about the linearity of it. I expected it to be a bit more open world, to tell the truth. Still, I managed to understand the gameplay enough to not die (on easy LOL. After the church I just couldn't handle normal mode), and finish the game to be traumatized that that ending. WHAT IN THE WORLD, RIGHT? So now we have to wait. We have to wait a long time for part 2. Will there be a part 3? I don't know. But if there is, I hope I'm alive to play it. Since the Final Fantasy series is a Play Station exclusive, I'll be playing it on my PS4 (unless by winter next year I have managed to get a PS5!)

4. Final Fantasy XVI:

Console: PS5 (or PS5)

Release Date: Summer 2023

About: I have been a Final Fantasy fan since the epic story of Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, and Kain (to name a few). Back then, it was called Final Fantasy 2, but we now know it's really Final Fantasy IV. I loved that game so much I replayed it twice. The gameplay was great, the story was great. It was pixelated, but awesome! I then went on to play Final Fantasy III, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, and XV (yes, I skipped eleven to fourteen). I enjoyed Final Fantasy XV enough to want to continue with the series, but I confess it has the WORST ending EVER. I mean, what were they thinking? I saw someplace that Final Fantasy XVI would be released in February, but as I looked again, all I can see is a summer release date (I checked on their official site). We'll see. Not that I won't have something to play in the meantime, and just like all the Final Fantasy games, it will probably still be a Play Station exclusive.

I hope you enjoyed my ramblings about future games. Now it's time to continue playing Spiderman: Miles Morales.

Are there other games you recommend? If so, recommend them in the comments!

Cheers!
