Book Review: Verity

Image
What a rollercoaster of a book. I've heard about this book from several people. About Coleen Hoover in general and how great her books were. But whenever I read the descriptions of her books I was turned off by the themes. I don't like tragic stories mostly. And I heat reading about injustice. That's what I read the books were about. But my co-worker continued to insist and the book she said I should read about her was Verity. And so I eventually go to it. I must say that the book starts weird, with an event that apparently makes no sense, but a good hook. Then we meet the characters and everything looks fine. Until it isn't. There are horrible scenes about a person doing horrible things to her spouse and children. So much that I decided NOT to recommend the book to my teenage daughter (who reads about everything she can get her hands on).  I read on anyway, and the ending was completely worth it. I did have to suffer a lot to get there, but eventually, I did. It was a...

Video Game Review: Ghost of Tsushima

Image
I had heard about this game and I had read it was similar to games like Witcher and Assassin's Creed. The setting was Japan, so that was a plus for me.  The story is set in Tsushima, which is a small Japanese island that made for a great map to play in. We follow Jin, a fallen samurai who is rescued and healed by a woman who needs his help rescuing her brother. A blacksmith who is being held prisoner by the Mongols. All of the samurai fell during a battle with the Mongols, and Jin is the only one left. At first, Jin uses his sword, but soon he learns to assassinate, which isn't the samurai way. The game even tells you in the beginning that if you keep assassinating people, you are going against samurai code, but I couldn't see a way around this, so I kept doing it. Eventually your actions that go against samurai code have a cost, which I thought was a cool detail. Most of the story is how you try to defeat the Mongols from taking over the island. You learn to throw smoke ...

Rambling from a Gamer Mom: More Games and DLCs I Want to Play

Image
There are so many games out there and more and more come up each month. Sometimes I feel like I won't be able to play them all in my life time. This truly is the era of creators. We can publish our books, our art, our videos, and even video games. I love being a creator, but I also love being a consumer, too. There are so many awesome things out there, I wish I had more time to consume it all. What Else Is Coming That I Want to Play? Jedi: Survivor This caught me completely by surprise. I was not expecting this. I recently played Jedi: Fallen Order and was blown away by the story line (and that ending!). I definitely did not expect a sequel to this character's story. Wow! Just wow! Sign me up! Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores I usually don't play DLCs if I have already finished the game, but I will for this DLC. The only problem is that they announced it will only be available for the PS5 and still haven't found one. Sad, I know. But I can't wait to go back t...
